Coach, Consultant, Mentor: What Do You Need?

Coach, Consultant, Mentor: What Do You Need?

I'm often asked about my role as a coach. What do I do? How can a coach help? Am I a coach, a consultant or a mentor and what's the difference between all of these titles?

Coach, Consultant, Mentor

A coach supports you to reach a specific goal or desired situation or outcome. They provide guidance and can help you to find the answers you have within (even if you don't think you have them!). According to John Whitmore, in Coaching for Performance.

'Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them'.

A consultant deals with problems, evaluates the situation and provides expertise and answers.

Unlike a coach or consultant, a mentor's focus is on an individual (the "mentee”) and not on helping to solve a specific problem of a client. A mentor is,

'a person with experience in a job who supports and advises someone with less experience to help them develop in their work' - Cambridge English Dictionary.

There's often an overlap between these different approaches to learning and self development and each approach has a focus on support, performance and personal direction.

What Do I Do AND Why Do I Do it?

I've never been good at seeing others struggle and just leaving them to it. For a long time, it’s been frustrating for me to see others underachieve, lacking direction, waning in confidence and not achieving their full potential.

I'm someone who can help with so many of those things.

I can help you find your way through a problem. I'm someone who can listen when you need a sounding board or to flesh out an idea. Someone who can provide an independent view. A cheerleader but someone who can hold you accountable to help you set and achieve the goals you daren't write down! I can call time on the nonsense others tell you and the negative talk you tell yourself.

I'm a Coach, Consultant, Mentor and Connector. I LOVE to do all of these things and depending on what YOU need right now, I have the skills to support, help, encourage, nurture and develop as required.

Connector

"someone who knows many people." - The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell

I'm very confident with signposting, so if I don't have the knowledge or particular skillset best suited to help you....I'm very skilled at pointing you in the direction of someone who does. I also have an EPIC list of contacts and I'm someone who can help you to knock on doors you might be afraid to knock on or to help you make connections and important introductions.
