People love a good story. In fact, our brains are actually biologically wired to connect with narratives over raw data. This makes storytelling an incredibly powerful marketing tool.

What is Storytelling Marketing?

Storytelling marketing is the strategic use of narrative structures to communicate a brand’s message, values, products and/or services. Rather than simply listing facts, you use devices such as characters or a plot with conflict and a clear resolution to help potential customers connect with your brand and take action.

Why Is It So Powerful?

Stories allow us to experience information rather than simply consuming it. This means they’re great for attracting an audience, engaging them, and holding their attention.

Storytelling marketing also makes your brand more memorable. In a saturated market where lots of businesses offer similar products and services, it can really set you apart. After all, nobody else can tell the same story.

Finally, storytelling can help you create an emotional connection with your audience. They make your marketing feel authentic, human, and relatable, building trust and fostering long-term customer loyalty.

5 Storytelling Frameworks

Not sure where to start? Here are five simple storytelling frameworks you can use as a jumping off point…

1.    The Origin Story

Sharing why you do what you do and how you built your business is a great way to humanise your brand and connect with your audience. Read Franky Shanahan’s guest post, Why Good Copy is Key (and How to Start Writing It), for more on this.

2.    Customer Hero Journey

Imagine your ideal client as the hero of your story trying to overcome a particular challenge or pain point. Position your brand as the helpful guide transporting them towards a happy ending.

Nike’s famous ‘Just Do It’ campaign is a brilliant example of this. The customer wants to start exercising, stay fit, or feel more confident, but they feel unmotivated, intimidated or they’re unsure where to begin. Nike empowers them to overcome these challenges and be the hero.

3.    Failure to Success Narrative

People love a transformation! Contrast a past mistake or early struggle with a lesson learned or recent breakthrough. The ‘Museum of Failures’ trend on Instagram is a good place to look for inspiration.

4.    Idea to End Result

Take people behind the scenes and turn your creative process into a compelling story. This works really well for physical products, but it can be used in a variety of contexts.

For example, you could take your customers on a journey as you prepare to launch a new service. Alternatively, you could share the story behind a big transformation like a rebrand. 100 Days to Rebuild Graze is a good recent example of this framework in use.

5.    Diary or Day in the Life

Ground your brand in reality by following a customer, its creator (you), or a team member through a single day or week in their life.
This works well across a range of formats. For example, you can share micro-vlogs on TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube Shorts. Full-length vlogs work for YouTube. And then there’s photo-driven content such as blog posts on your website or carousels on Instagram like the one Franky posted recently.

My Tips for Getting Started

  • More often than not, you want to make the client the focus of your story. Anchor everything in what they feel and experience. Even when you’re talking about yourself, your brand, or your products and services, bring the narrative back to them.
  • Keep the story simple and relatable. You don’t need plot twists and character arks – you need a story that will resonate.
  • If you’re asking someone to do something like buy your product, you have to make them care. The best stories come from the heart.
  • Remember, people will not hire you based on your story alone. They want to know how your story can make their story better.
  • Always tailor your story to the platform. For example, Instagram needs a strong hook, fast, raw moments, and quick insights. In contrast, long-form content like blog posts and YouTube videos give you the space to build deeper, more detailed narratives.
  • Sounding human should be a top priority. Avoid AI word salad and corporate sounding polished perfection. If you get stuck, try recording a quick, casual voice memo and transcribing what you’ve said. You’ll probably want to edit and refine the results, but it can help you figure out how to get your point across naturally.
