What is a Lifestyle Business?

A lifestyle business is one that’s purposefully and intentionally designed to serve and enable the life its owner wants to live. The beauty of it is, you get to define what that lifestyle looks like. It might involve a 20-hour work week with the freedom to take your children to and from school each day. Or it may be a 40-hour work week with plenty of time for travel and adventure on the side.

‘For me, my lifestyle business is all about enabling me to do the work I feel called to do, while being able to take care of myself and my health and wellbeing in the process, and to bring me creative and financial freedom too.’ – Jen Carrington, Creative Coach

At it’s core, building a lifestyle business isn’t about chasing money, it’s about chasing what that money can enable and bring. However, many of us have grown up with a single, rigid definition of success, equating its attainment with money and power. What does this mean for those of us who aren’t motivated by the accumulation of wealth alone?

What Does Success Look Like for You?

I believe success is a deeply personal thing. What drives one entrepreneur may mean nothing to another. If you’re focussing on someone else’s version of success, chances are you’ll never achieve it. You’re essentially chasing someone else’s dream while standing in the way of your own.

‘Whether or not you are successful depends on how you define success, and on the trade-offs you are willing to not just accept but embrace as you pursue that definition of success.’ – Jeff Haden, Contributing Editor, Inc.

Defining success on your own terms allows you to break away from the standard one-size-fits-all approach. It allows you to embrace all your strengths and weaknesses, instead of hiding from them, thinking success can only look a certain way.
Establishing your own definition of success requires introspection. You must dig deep while also doing your best to ignore external influences. Discovering your personal values and getting to grips with what drives you should help you carve out an exciting and fulfilling path for your business.

If You Do One Thing This Week…

Spend some time journaling about success and what it means to you.

Ask yourself who you really want to be. Stripped of all expectations, what would you like your life to look like? What do you want to create? Are you living and breathing these values within your business? What do you need to make happen in order to build the kind of lifestyle you want to lead?
