3 Ways to Put Humanity Back into Your Business in an AI World
I’m sure I don’t need to tell you the use of AI has exploded in recent years.
In many ways, AI has shifted from a novelty into a foundational business tool, drastically altering how companies automate tasks, deliver services, and manage operational productivity.
Initially, AI adoption was restricted to large enterprises with massive budgets. Over time, it’s become much more accessible to smaller companies. According to one study, 88% of businesses report using AI in at least one function, though the majority are still in the experimental or piloting phase (source).
If these sorts of statistics make you anxious, I want to validate those feelings, especially if your business is directly threatened by AI. Rapid change is destabilising, and none of us know what the future holds. It’s OK to feel apprehensive and protective of your livelihood.
This article isn’t about whether we should or shouldn’t use AI in our businesses (you know how I feel about ‘shoulds’). While I have lots of opinions on this subject, my thinking isn’t black and white. It’s a conversation that requires a great deal of nuance. Perhaps I’ll tackle it in the future.
For now, I want to acknowledge the reality small business owners are currently facing and share something useful in response. Yes, AI is probably here to stay, but there’s also a growing backlash against it. As business owners, I believe we can use this backlash to our advantage.
People are craving human connection. Many also dislike the uncertainty AI creates online. Some experts believe we’re experiencing a ‘trust recession’ – a broad, sustained decline in consumer trust in businesses, institutions, and online sources. Deepfakes, AI-generated reviews, and fake profiles make it harder to know what’s real. In 2026, there is more information available than ever before, but people are less sure about who and what they can trust.
In a world of AI slop, putting the humanity back into your business could be the best way to stand out, build trust, and win the loyalty of your audience. Let’s explore this together…

3 Ways to Put Humanity Back into Your Business in an AI World
1. Prioritise Collaborating with Humans
Building and nurturing relationships has always been the glue that holds my business together. I love connecting with people in my industry, and I know collaborating with others has allowed me to do some of my best work to date.
In my other role as Director and Head Planner at Benessamy, collaboration is key. I partner with a variety of professionals on every single project, so I see the kind of magic that can happen when you embrace the skills, knowledge and creativity of other experts. The same can definitely be said for working with B2B service providers like virtual assistants, copywriters, designers and, yes, business coaches like me!
Even if you don’t need hands-on, practical input from others within your business, I’d encourage you to seek out community. Things like co-working, co-mentoring, or even just a regular coffee date with a colleague could make a marked difference to your business.
2. Embrace Being ‘Old School’ as Much as Possible
Sometimes, in the rush to evolve, we lose sight of traditional methods and ways of doing things. But progress doesn’t have to mean abandoning the old, more human ways completely. In fact, holding on to some of them could be the best way to stand out in a crowded digital marketplace.
So, what might this look like? For me, being old school means putting the customer first, solving problems and personalising every experience. More than anything, it’s about real human connection, and the trust, respect and loyalty that comes with it.
I will always lean towards doing things in-person. From networking events and business meetings to coaching and consulting, I want to meet people face-to-face and engage in real conversation.
The ever-encroaching presence of AI also makes me want to prioritise analogue communication and traditional methods of marketing. For example, sending handwritten notes to clients or investing in beautiful, printed marketing materials – anything that emphasises the human behind the brand… me!

3. Connect to Your Own Humanity Behind the Scenes
Before you ask AI to help you clarify your ideas or work through a problem, try journaling. It’s arguably one of the best ways to untangle your thoughts.
Typing or writing by hand forces your brain to slow down and process complex emotions, encouraging deeper critical thinking. Journaling also eliminates the ‘convenience gap’ where AI finishes your thoughts for you. Ultimately, the instant, effortless results promised by this sort of technology may not be good for you, your brain, or your business. AI is a shortcut, and we should be careful where we apply it in our lives.
In contrast, journaling can be a useful tool for problem solving, goal setting and tracking progress. It can help you brainstorm ideas, refine your strategy, and prioritise tasks. Celebrating wins and learning from challenging experiences also boosts motivation and builds your confidence as a business owner. I’m so passionate about this practice, I’ve also created a free toolkit to help you reflect, reduce stress, and build confidence. It contains 25 positive affirmations you can read aloud, journaling sheets, a ‘not to-do list’, and a weekly reflection template.
